Pakistanis are in a state of mourning after close to 60 people were killed and many others injured following an explosion in a park within the city of Lahore. The incident happened on Easter Day evening at a time when the park was crowded with families. Lahore is the capital city of Punjab, Pakistan’s largest and wealthiest province which also houses the political base of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. According to police sources, the explosion may have been a suicide bomb, although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Based on speculation, the bomber’s target were Christians who were at a park in Lahore, celebrating the Easter weekend with casualties ranging from women to children.
A witness recalled that he was walking with his wife and children towards a commuter when the explosion threw all of them to the floor. Another eye witness also reported that the explosion was followed by a stampede.
President, Mamnoon Hussain, has in strong terms, condemned the explosion just as the Punjab government has declared three days of mourning. This explosion is coming just days after Brussels airport was attacked by the Islamic State of Syria and Iran (ISIS) terrorists which left about 31 people dead and 270 others injured.
